Sharpen Your Scissors Like a Pro: The Seamstress Secret

All my scissors are sharper than a razor, and it’s thanks to an old trick I learned from a seamstress in the 1990s. Here’s how you can keep your scissors razor-sharp, too:

Step 1: Gather Supplies

Scissors

Aluminum foil or fine sandpaper

A small cloth

Step 2: Fold & Cut (for foil method)

Fold a piece of aluminum foil several times to make a thick strip.

Cut through the foil with your scissors 6–10 times. This helps realign and sharpen the blades.

Step 3: Sandpaper Sharpening (Optional)

Open the scissors fully and cut through fine-grit sandpaper 6–10 times.

Wipe the blades with a cloth to remove residue.

Step 4: Test & Maintain

Try cutting a piece of paper or fabric. If it’s still dull, repeat the process.

Regularly sharpen your scissors every few months to keep them precise.

Pro Tip:
Don’t just sharpen—clean your scissors after every use and tighten any loose screws. This ensures they stay sharper, longer.
