How to Clean a Top-Loading Washing Machine

Set the washer to the largest load size and hottest water setting.

Add 4 cups of white vinegar (or 1 cup bleach for mold/mildew).

Let the washer run for a few minutes, then pause for 1 hour to allow soaking.

3. Scrub the Interior
While soaking, scrub with a cloth or toothbrush around:

Agitator

Lid

Fabric softener dispenser

Rim and underside of the lid

4. Run a Baking Soda Cycle
After the vinegar cycle finishes, run another hot cycle with 1 cup baking soda to neutralize odors and loosen buildup.

5. Wipe Down the Exterior
Clean knobs, handles, and the washer’s exterior with a damp cloth dipped in vinegar.

6. Keep It Fresh

Leave the lid open after washes to prevent mold and odors.

Repeat deep cleaning every 1–2 months.

💡 Pro Tip:
For HE (high-efficiency) top loaders, reduce vinegar to 2 cups and baking soda to ½ cup to avoid excessive suds.
